Stop the insanity, I just want to remember . .

Sound familiar?

I have two children in high school. One diagnosed early on with ADD and the other was a straight “A” student until his sophomore year. Both at some point, forgot how to remember things. I mean their short term memory was pitiful. They used to be able to remember all kinds of things. Suddenly, near nothing was their short term memory capacity.

What's a concerned father to do? Well, at first glance into my daughter's situation with ADD (as it turned out, she doesn't have this at all, she's brilliant). I remembered that in my day, there was no such thing. How could that be? Why all of the sudden were my kids who used to get great grades, now dumb a door knob (not really, just needed to capture their brilliant minds by the scruff of the neck)? Please understand, my kids are both brilliant, when they want to be.

My first resolve was to understand what was happening. My daughter could remember easily those things that she wanted, that which was important to her and so too, could my son. But, back to my daughter for a moment.

I'm old school and employed a technique that my parents employed when I was growing up. My parents cured my ADD in 5 minutes. So, I threatened her with punishment, didn't work. I offered her rewards, didn't work. I was at a total loss now, "what the hell was wrong with my angel"? I finally decided to whip that butt - It worked!! For the short term it worked, and I felt like scum of the earth. It hurt me really bad to do this, and if it were to be successful, I would have to "POP" that behind 3 - 4 times a day - that's just plain abuse. I couldn't do it. That's not the POP this is about.

My daughter is brilliant, a star, innovative, and creative. But, what’s up? Really. A dirty bum father whipping an angel of a kid did work. but why?

What was working with this method? I asked my daughter and after her telling me, "I hate you" a couple of times and being grateful for her short term memory loss issues for the first time, we found the answer.

Now, on to my son. He made basically straight As in middle school. What happened? The system happened with him. I mean the Middle School he was in "babied" him and once his ninth grade year was done (grades falling, but still 3.25 ish), he hit a wall in the tenth grade. His grades dropped early in the year to a 1.75 GPA. He did manage to get it back up to just under a 3.0 by the time the year was over. But, he had to stay up until 100 AM each morning. Was it the basketball practice, girls, or what?

You guessed it - I definitely tried that old school on him and it worked short term - yet again. I asked him what the deal was. He told me.

Can you believe it was basically the same thing my daughter explained in about what felt like 63 hours (that he explained in five minutes). How could there be such a disparity in how long a girl and guy tells the same story..?? Ok, that's another story . . I love all ladies and my little angel of a lady to be, was spot on in a round about way.

Most systems require you to do three things; a "hook" or "peg", the subject you want to remember, and the "action" that your going to use to link the them together. Well these simple techniques take the guess work out if trying to figure out just how your going to "animate" the things you want to remember.

I had already read one book on memory before this one and Mr. Mason still left me a bit confused while reading the most important chapter. He introduces concepts without explaining them well. He does not explain enough the few mnemonic concepts he mentions in this very short book. Thankfully, I had 2 other more thorough books that helped me understand what he was talking about. The only reason why I did not return this book for a refund was because he did introduce one technique that could be helpful - the "pop" effect when trying to create a visual image you can remember. In other words, after you decide what PEG system you are going to use, make sure you have the item to be memorized interact with that PEG system in a popping manner (some type of dramatic, explosive, popping effect). Other than that, I would not recommend this book.
