Even though I'm not a young adult, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a gripping story that goes from one exciting action to the next, and I had a hard time putting it down. Monumental forces of good meet monumental forces of evil, but sometimes we don't know exactly who is good and who is evil, and the suspense is tantalizing. Though it is based on fantasy the book deals with serious real life issues of trust, as the protagonist must decide who to trust without fully knowing others' motives or their past. Incorporating the culture of social media makes this a very contemporary read. I highly recommend The Lightrunner.Product details

Great read and very original—not your everyday fantasy book. A girl finds an armband that can heal wounds. First, it heals a knee injury she suffered while skateboarding, then a severely wounded stray dog. She tries to keep it hidden and has to go on the run to save her own life, then falls for a boy who’s got a secret of his own. Dara, the main character, really touched me. She’s a wonderful, memorable character who’s got a heart-wound of her own.
This is a gripping story, not just for YA readers, but also for adult readers! Set in the backroads of gritty LA, Dara has to rely on herself, using her instincts to uncover the past along with her present situation. The occult, Tarot cards, and the media help her along the way. This is a book teens will love and most probably recommend to other friends.

Philip Brown has captured the gritty angst of a teen on the streets in a way that kept me as close to Dara as her skateboard. Brown's style is very engaging and kept me turning the pages. Great plot, heartwarming connections among characters and the overall message of love and empowerment make this a good read for any age.
Light Runner is an excellent choice for teen readers. It is a fast-paced novel with a teenaged girl as the central character. Dara shows ingenuity, bravery and cleverness as she avoids authority and seeks to find her father, all while embracing a new-found "gift." The friendship between Dara and Diego is genuine and refreshing. The story has the right amount of tension and peril to hold the reader's interest. As a middle school teacher, I am always looking for good books for my students. I highly recommend this novel and will add it to my classroom library.
